As an example, in 2007,
17 insurance providers offered 2008 Medicare Part D prescription drug plans on a national basis with two new entrants (Sterling Insurance Group and Universal American Financial Corporation), while two companies will pull out of the national Part D plan market (Express Scripts, Inc. - SAMAscript and NMHC SYSTEMS, INC).
In contrast, in 2023, there were around 8 Medicare plan providers or insurance carriers that offered stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plans on a national basis (offered by such companies as: AARP/UnitedHealthcare, Aetna Medicare, Cigna, Clear Spring Health, Elixir Insurance, Humana, Mutual of Omaha Rx, and Wellcare).
