The Medicare Modernization Act mandated that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) establish geographic regions for the implementation of the Medicare Part D prescription drug plans (PDP) and the Medicare Advantage (MA or MA-PD) Plans. Accordingly, CMS established 34 PDP regions made up of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, CMS also established 5 separate PDP regions for the United States Territories. Some of the 34 PDP regions are made of single states, while others are composed of more than one state.
