Unfortunately, the donut hole or coverage gap is still here.
The current plan is for the coverage gap to "close" in 2020. However, please keep in mind that this just means that seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries will pay 25% on purchases made in the donut hole (coverage gap), not that medications will be free.
What Medicare means by "closing the coverage gap" is that beneficiaries will pay the same in the donut hole (coverage gap) as they would pay during the initial coverage phase -- assuming that they have a standard benefit plan with which they pay 25% for their medications during the initial coverage phase.
